In just a handful of releases, Giles Smith and Martin Dawson’s Two Armadillo’s project has become synonymous with quality house music.
Here, the duo follow up releases on Dessous and Buzzin Fly with their second outing for UK based Four:Twenty with “Patience”.
A ten minute exercise in subtle, restrained deep house with true emotion, ‘Patience’ uses overlaid strings and synths, uncluttered percussion and warm pianos to tell a story which can only end in a sense of well being and the onset of summer. This really is a special piece of music.
Four:Twenty have kept things within a London base by recruiting Simple’s Will Saul and Tam Cooper to reinterpret “Patience”. This would be no easy task, but as you’d expect Saul and Cooper have stamped their own style on the track by toughening the drums, teasing the melodies and adding their own inimitable electronic flourishes to their mix.
With Giles Smith as resident of the now infamous Secret Sundaze and Martin Dawson’s King Roc alias, Two Armadillos have certainly built their pedigree; combined with Cooper and Saul on a 12” bearing the prestigious Four:Twenty badge, this release is undoubtedly a treat.

Textura.org Review
The two also re-appear on Four:Twenty with the ten-minute “Patience” accompanied by a makeover of same courtesy of Will Saul and Tam Cooper. Summer again feels mere seconds away when the deep house original beautifully works itself into shape in a slow-building mix of warm house chords, tinkling percussion, and echo-laden claps. Following the addition of whistling synths and piano, the skipping groove deepens into a steaming swing that surges blissfully on and on. Saul and Cooper tackle the not inconsiderable challenge of following it up by sparking the tune's now-heavier and funkier bottom end with burbling bass synth patterns and double-time hi-hats. Take your pick: both versions succeed gloriously.
