Four:Twenty rapidly approaches the half-century mark with Jim Rivers latest, the “Forget About It EP” which comes with some rather splendid remixes from Luna City Express and young blood Pedramovich and Paul Loraine.
Rivers has had a fair old year, with his Global Underground NuBreed mix of tuneful deep and tech house turning the prodigous DJ talent into a, fittingly, global talent. His releases for the likes of Simple, Mouseville and Renaissance have done no harm either, but it’s this superb EP for the Bristol based Four:Twenty which really stands out.
“By Any Means” is an intricately augmented 808 drum track which uses classic stabs to provide melody and depth while cunning key changes and well placed drops to make the 7 minute arrangement twist and turn splendidly.
Moon Harbour stalwarts Luna City Express deliver a much more driving take, dubbing out the chords but adding a burbling acid bassline and vocal effects to create a classic hi-tech soul sound which is warm and hypnotic.
Paul Loraine, a Bristol based producer, dj and promoter who is swiftly on the rise turns in a thoroughly modern house reworking which is faithful to the original but strips it back further and deeper – real late night material.
Title track, “Forget About It” rounds off the original material on the package, with Rivers cranking out the 808 and edgy FM bass underneath some gloriously summer (remember that?) vibes, offsetting each other beautifully.
Supernature artist Pedramovich provides the lone remix of “Forget About It”, turning it into a churning, clanging tech-house track which is a sharp but welcome contrast to the deeper elements of the package.
