After sneaking out a non-club release for it’s 50th release, Four:Twenty head back to the dancefloor with “Return to Jah EP” from Tsuba main man Kevin Griffiths and Okain.
Between the two artists, there’s a fair amount of positive reputation to bring to the release. Griffiths, a veteran of the UK house scene has taken his Tsuba label from fledgling imprint to one of the worlds finest house labels in just a few years while also developing a DJ career which has seen him grace some of the finest clubs in the world. His recent productions for Tsuba have also seen him get an unprecedented amount of support for a new recording artist, with media and DJs all leaping on “Cantona Kung Fu” and his debut, “Jaguar Shoes”.
Okain, aka Samuel Thalmann, has little to worry about career-wise, too. Since 2007 he has established himself as a purveyor of increasingly tight house grooves while also delivering some outstanding collaborations with fellow Frenchman, Paul Ritch.
“Return to Jah EP” launches with Griffiths solo take of “Jah”, a shaker driven cut which fuses gluey congas with a soft, padding kick drum while organ chords and vocal effects provide a rich backdrop for a sparingly but effectively used dub vocal sample.
Okain and Griffiths team up for the heavier, bass driven “Jah Dub” which has a more late-night feel than it’s original mix while Leeds’ man and Cocoon artist Simon Baker delivers a superb remix characterised by jacking grooves and a heady organ-led break.
Finally, Griffiths and Okain pair up for closer “Cuba Quest” where a nagging bassline and rolling percussion are all that’s needed to create a beat-perfect club groove of the highest order.
"Kevin Griffiths has totally nailed his production game of late and pops up on Bristol label Four:Twenty with this very tasty release....making it Four:Twenty’s strongest release for a while, and that’s saying a lot !!!” mixmag
