Four:Twenty’s recent desire to confound expectation continues with this excellent slice of deep house music from Seulo, the alter-ego of none other than Jim Rivers – a man who has otherwise been known for a distinctly more “big room” sound.
‘One World’ EP displays Rivers’ love, knowledge and aptitude when it comes to producing subtle, classically informed dance which draws respectfully on Detroit, Chicago, Berlin and London’s house/techno history.
This rich distillation of sounds is brilliantly presented with the title cut, “One World”, using modern drums with a dense mixture of chords, stabs and instrument samples. The interplay between sounds makes for a spacious yet rhythmic feel and added to an arrangement which draws out the best of each component patiently and effectively, works perfectly.
One of Holland’s current darlings, Lauhaus, takes a break from delivering tight dancefloor excursions for the impressive Intacto and Remote Area labels and serves up an extremely well judged take on “One World”. Sensibly doing very little to interrupt the mood and feel of the original, the Dutch producer makes it his own by straightening the arrangement, extending the break and adding a dubbier feel. It’s a less is more approach, but works fantastically.
‘Shadowman’ completes the EP with an approach similar to its A-side companion, but with its reference point honed in on the UK’s interpretation of Detroit’s sounds in the early ‘90’s. The result is a successful and fresh update, coming on like a modern day version of what is probably one of the most exciting periods in techno.
Simple, but with the kind of soulful naivety that is all but extinguished in our cynical times, ‘One World’ is a definite must-check from a surprising source and another great addition to the Four:Twenty catalogue.
